Placement Testing

Test Administrator Instructions

Dear Test Administrator:

Thank you so much for agreeing to administer the ACCUPLACERŽ test to the incoming Towson University student. If you are familiar with the ACCUPLACERŽ test, I apologize for any redundancies in the following information. However, some of our procedures may differ from yours.

Before administering the test:

  • Verify identity by checking a photo ID card and notification email
  • Explain your procedures for restroom break
  • For students taking the writing test, please explain that there is a one-hour time limit on the essay and that they must type between 300-600 words.  (Please give student scrap paper)
  • For students taking the reading and math tests, please explain that they are multiple choice and are un-timed. Also, please inform the student that NO CALCULATOR USE IS ALLOWED other than the four-function calculator that appears within the math test battery for relevant question. (The student may use scrap paper)
  • Ask the student to raise his/her hand when finished the test, not to close the test score report after reading it, and not to leave the computer until you speak with him/her.

When you’re ready to administer the test, and before the student is seated at the computer:

  • Go to www.accuplacer.org
  • Go to Tools and turn off pop-up blockers
  • Enter username  (sent by email) and password  (sent by email)
  • Click on LOGIN
  • Click on Administer Test (top center)
  • Click on Administer New Test Session
  • Select  test battery from the Branching Profile's drop-down box. (Student's test battery will be noted in the Confirmation Email sent from Placement Testing to student to give to you.)
  • Click on Administer Test (bottom right)

*NOTE: If you experience a problem administering the test, please click on System Requirements to see if the workstation meets "Pass" for all categories. System Requirements link is located on the ACCUPLACERŽ Login screen and the Administer Test screen.

When the student is seated at the computer:

  • Direct student to read ACCUPLACERŽ System Student Privacy Policy before clicking on Accept
  • On the Student Information screen, direct student to type in his/her Towson University I.D. number in the Student I.D. field and to complete other information in the required fields. Please note that the student must type his/her TU I.D. number exactly as it is given in the confirmation email
  • If ACCUPLACERŽ testing page will not proceed, please contact ACCUPLACERŽ Help Desk at 1-866-607-5223.

During the exam:

  • If the screen freezes during the exam, please contact ACCUPLACERŽ Help Desk.

If the computer stops working or “seems” to stop working, do the following:

  • Check the status bar at the bottom of the screen to see if there are two windows open - sometimes students alt-tab over to the wrong window
  • If the problem is not the wrong window, close the exam screen and you should be returned to the testing options page. Choose Manage Open Test Sessions, enter student's I.D., first and last name....perform search. The test will reappear at the point the student had reached.

After completion of the test:

  • Print score report and give it to the student.

Re-testing a student:

Some students are eligible for a re-test according to our re-test policy. Students must request permission in writing to the placement testing email; and if approved, we will email the student a confirmation to re-test in the appropriate test battery.

If you need help during the testing session, please call 410-704-2291 from 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. At other times, please contact ACCUPLACERŽ Help Desk at 1-866-607-5223.

Thank you again for your assistance.
