PREPARATION SCHEDULE FOR M.O.A.S. SPRING 1997
The following schedule of activities is designed to maximize the quality of our preparation for the MOAS in the ten weeks we have before leaving for Washington. Although the actual amount of time for formal preparation will vary, and we may alter items contingent on our needs, this calendar is intended as a guide for timing the introduction of the important materials and concepts.
Week One (Jan. 30)
-- Introduction: distribution of materials, explanation of requirements, assignment of tasks (publicity, file organization, overview of MOAS 17, etc.
-- Research strategies: OAS documents, bibliography, newsletters, internet, etc.
-- Introduction to the Model OAS
Week Two (Feb. 4-6)
-- Brazil: domestic conditions, foreign policy, foreign policy speeches
-- Introduction to the Organization of American States (OAS)
Week Three (Feb. 11-13)
-- Resolution Writing/Position Papers
-- Public Speaking I: style, content, critiques
-- Committee Simulation I
-- Quiz No. 1 (The OAS)
Week Four (Feb. 18-20)
-- MOAS Rules of Procedure: discussion, Committee Simulation II
-- Public Speaking II: Presentation problem-solving
-- Quiz No. 2 (Brazil and the Model OAS)
Week Five (Feb. 25-27)
-- Quiz No. 3: MOAS Rules of Procedure
-- Caucusing: discussion and exercise
-- Committee Simulation III
-- Country updates (reports on various coutries by MOAS participants)

Week Six (March 4-6)
-- Teambuilding Activity: Strengths and Weaknesses
-- The OAS Charter; Committee Simulation IV
-- Delegate policy position paper due (see Portfolio assignment)
-- Pre-briefing trip to Washington (OAS plus the Brazilian Mission)
Week Seven (March 11-13)
-- Public Speaking Activity: presentation and critique of position paper
-- Delegate Portfolio First Draft: individual conferences
