Towson University is Maryland's Metropolitan University
Regional. Responsive. Real-world.
Like people, colleges and universities come in many shapes and sizes-doctoral/research, master's/comprehensive, or liberal arts. As a comprehensive university, Towson University offers a wide range of baccalaureate programs and is committed to graduate education at both the master's and applied doctorate level. Towson also defines itself as a metropolitan university, with a mission that includes teaching, research and public service.
Metropolitan universities serve a broad cross-section of society in a large, complex, metropolitan setting. By definition as Maryland's Metropolitan University, Towson University serves a diverse population through economic development, social progress, and community and business outreach.
"In many ways, the metropolitan universities embody the American dream. We take a broad cross-section of society and give them the tools they need to become upwardly mobile. That's our role, and it's an exciting one," says Towson President Robert L Caret.
Dr. Caret is currently serving as President of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU). He has also served as vice president and secretary/treasurer of CUMU and has served on the Program and Public Policy Committee. President Caret participated in the formation of the coalition in 1990, with Towson as a founding member. Members now number 84, including institutions in Canada, Australia, Mexico and England.
