Graduate Assistantships

Students interested in applying for a Graduate Assistantship will find information here. Towson University academic departments and businesses that would like to hire a Graduate Assistant can also find deadlines, forms and other details.

Information for Students
The Graduate Assistantship Program offers a limited number of graduate assistantships each year to qualified students. Students apply for assistantships either on or off-campus for a period of one term (fall or spring), academic year, or summer. Assistantships are available on a full-time (20 hours per week) or half-time (10 hours per week) basis.

A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships and research assistantships are available in certain programs. Students must submit an assistantship application and a resume to apply.

General Information
To be eligible for an assistantship, students must:

  • Be admitted to a degree program.
  • Be in good academic standing and maintain a minimum semester grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken for graduate credit during the assistantship.
  • Register for course units during every academic term of the assistantship. Full-time assistants (20 hour GA position) are eligible for 12 units each term but must register for at least 6 unit each term. Half-time assistants (10 hour GA position) are eligible for 6 units each term but must register for at least 3 units each term.
  • Submit an assistantship application and resume every academic year.
  • Although there is no application deadline, most on-campus assistants are selected in early spring. For more information about assistantships, call the Graduate Assistantship Office at 410- 704-4484 or e-mail to

Assistantship Openings ( will soon be posted on Hire@TU. The new process is underway. Look for details in March)

External Graduate Assistantships
Some graduate programs offer external graduate assistantships and part-time jobs closely related to a chosen field, to graduate students to help defray the cost of advanced study. The external graduate assistantship program expands the range of opportunities beyond the university campus. The program is a partnership between Towson University and the community, providing the talents of mature students for business, government, industry and education. External assistantships are not available in all programs.

External graduate assistants may be employed for 10 to 20 hours per week, on either a 10-month or 12-month basis. An organization hiring a graduate assistant is asked to develop a job description, supervise the student, and evaluate the student's work, in much the same manner as regular employees. Organizations are asked to provide work that involves the student in a substantial way in the organization's activities. The organization is expected to cover the costs of graduate tuition, a stipend, and an administrative fee.
