/5/08Happy second week of school everyone!!
David Butler, a QSU Alumni, came to the group to talk about his up and coming
fraternity for gay men of color, Delta Phi Upsilon, and the programs he is
preparing on behalf of the Baltimore-Washington Chapter. Their program is called
Poetry with Power. It is an evening of socially and politically conscious poetry
with an African-American empowerment/awareness theme. It is on Wednesday,
February 20th at 8pm. The event will be held at the Five Seasons Restaurant and
Night Club. All questions can be directed to David Butler at david.c.butler.jr@gmail.com
Next on the agenda was the Involvement Fairrrrrre, which is TOMORROW the 6th
from 11am-2pm on the second floor of the Union. I highly encourage all of you to
go out and see what Towson has to offer. If you would like to help out at the
QSU Table just show up or e-mail Theresa tmache1@towson.edu.We also encourage
people to bring donations of baked goods or any other small things we can pass
out to people passing by!
Equality Maryland Lobby Day is February 11th in Annapolis. So far we only have
four people going who have signed up to take the van down. If you have your own
transportation then that is great! But if you need a ride we are providing a van
that seats 15 people and so far there are 11 spots left. The van leaves at 3:45
from the loading dock. E-mail the gmail account (towsonqsu@gmail.com) if you
would also like to ride down with us.
For those of you are unfamiliar EQMD
Lobby day, it is a day that gives you the opportunity to meet with your
legislator and talk about issues that
pertain to you and your community.
The 14th Multicultural Conference is the 14th, next Thursday, and is in the
Union from 8:30am-4pm. Please show up to one, or as many, of the events as you
can. A bunch of great planning has gone into these sessions and you can learn a
lot about yourself and others that live on and off campus. Registration is free,
and you can register on the Towson website. All you have to do is search for the
Multicultural Conference. Attached to the minutes are the sessions that include
LGBT related issues.
The LGBTQIA Evening Panel will be February 27th at 7pm in the Potomac. The panel
is an opportunity to listen and ask questions about other people's story. If you
would like to be on the panel please e-mail Lauren lkaplo1@towson.edu with your
name and why you would like to share your experiences on being… you! This is
open to everyone including faculty and staff, which is why it is the LGBTQIA
panel.
The Coming out Monologues were next on the agenda. We are trying to find people
who are willing to share their coming out stories, whether you are coming out as
a gay male, a transgender individual, a straight ally, or anyone else who has a
story of them coming out. People who submit stories do not necessarily have to
perform their own stories, and stories can be submitted anonymously. If you
would like your story to be heard please e-mail Lauren at lkaplo1@towson.edu.
Please submit all stories by March 1st.
Speaking of monologues!! (yes we planned that) Lexi Hubb talked to us again
about the Vagina Monologues and their auditions. The auditions will be held this
Thursday the 7th at 5pm and this Friday the 8th at 4pm in room 3058 in the
Center for the Arts. Any questions can be submitted to Lexi at ahubb1@towson.edu
After announcements we brought up an issue that we would like all members to
consider. Sharon Krevor-Weisbaum a lawyer from the law firm Brown, Goldstein,
and Levy approached QSU exec board with an invitation to join on as plaintiffs
on a current case. (Information listed on the link below) There are strong
opinions both in favor and in opposition for signing on as plaintiffs, and we
would like to make sure we hear the opinions of QSU as a whole, and not make any
decisions before everyone has had time to think about the proposal and have a
chance to ask questions. Next Week, Sharon will be available to answer any
questions you may come up with, and to give a brief explanation of the
situation. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail QSU.
