Last night meeting was help in the fabulous Center for
Student Diversity (CSD) in order to give a chance to the members to see the
exhibit “Love Makes A Family” before it is taken down. If you have not had a
chance to see the exhibit please stop by the CSD on the 3rd floor of
the Union. And make sure you sign the guest book!
Our Icebreaker was your name and your favorite thing about
lasts weeks Towson Gay Pride week, which went extremely well! Thank you to
everyone who helped hand out shirts, cut out petitions, set-up and perform for
the drag show, came to the Candle light vigil, tabled against hate crimes, read
for the coming out monologues, and last but not least, came to our awesome
picnic! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves last week!
First on our list was Douglas Matthews from the Towson
Greens. He came to QSU for support in his quest to change a clause in the
schools constitution.
- Specifically, it is Clause 3.
- What’s the problem? Clause 3 includes the words “due
to acts of God” when referring to environmental/weather issues.
- Matthews believes this is an act of ignorance, because
not everyone at our school believes in god and since this is a public
university he believes that everyone should be represented through in and
through out the whole institution.
- What will change? The words “due to acts of God” will
change to “due to circumstances beyond ones control” He believes that is
this more inclusive for everyone and still leaves room for the original
“acts of God” it is just not specific towards any one religion or belief.
The second thing on out list was and interactive activity;
requests from QSU for our New Director, Maren Greathouse, who will be joining us
in the fall. This is what we came up with:
- Fieldtrip! Perhaps gay day at Kings Dominion?
- More outreach
- Spreading hate crime awareness
- To our allies
- To closeted students
- To Trans indentifying individuals
- Pride parade/March, preferably in the evening when
less people will have classes.
- Ally week!
- Political events
- Lobby day involvement
- Campaigning on Towson
- For things like gender neutral options, such
as bathrooms, housing, etc.
- Promoting AIDS walk
- Social
- Gay prom
- Fundraising outside of athletic events
- Tabling
If you have any suggestions/requests/comments please e-mail
the g-mail account and let us know what you are thinking! The LGBT Director of
Student Development is here for the students! And unless you tell us what you
want we will never know. Please please please let us know if you want anything
on campus that is LGBT related and our director will try her hardest to bring it
to you.
The last thing on our agenda was Jamal Hailey,
Co-coordinator of Empowerment. He came to QSU to do some community outreach to
our students.
- He is currently a graduate student at Towson but he is
working with “Connect to Protect: Baltimore” to help spread awareness and
education to young people.
- He is looking for 16- 24 aged men to volunteer for the
program in order to help prevent HIV amongst our community.
- Responsibilities may include leading discussion
groups, creating safe-space social settings, and mobilizing Baltimore’s
young Same Gender Loving community around HIV Prevention.
- If you are knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS, motivated,
and able to work with diverse populations, please contact Jamal at
jhailey@peds.umaryland.edu
