Howard Nixon, Ph.D.

Howard Nixon received his B.A. (Social Relations) from Lehigh University and Ph.D. (Sociology) from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been a faculty member and administrator at the University of Vermont and Appalachian State University as well as at Towson University. The sociology of sport, social networks and organizations, and the sociology of higher education are his primary scholarly interest areas.

He has taught General Education courses in introductory sociology, sociological analysis (an advanced writing course), and the sociology of sport, along with courses in various other areas of sociology. He is the author of books about the sociology of sport, small groups and the sociology of disability and of journal articles and conference presentations concerning many aspects of sociology. His most recent research and writing have focused on the sociology of pain and injuries, disability sport and social change in higher education.

His latest book is Sport in a Changing World, Boulder, CO: Paradigm, 2008.
