Speech and Debate are activities that touch students' lives.   Participants in forensics are indebted to a long line of educators from  across the U.S. and all over the world.  In the interest of promoting the art of eloquent speech to future generations, the Towson University Speech and Debate Team promotes volunteerism in the community.  Team members help mentor secondary school students by working with programs in Baltimore under the aegis of the Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL).  The grant supported by the Open Society Institute and Towson is enriching future generations.

Towson debaters also volunteer to judge and manage BUDL tournaments year round. Below is footage from a documentary about the league.

This year Beth Skinner and Andy Ellis started the Baltimore College Debate Initiative. The BCD is designed to foster intercollegiate debate in the Baltimore area.  The BCD hosted four tournaments this year.  Programs were started at Johns Hopkins, Temple and other universities in the region.  Skinner and Ellis received the John A. Jacobson Award at Novice Junior Varsity Nationals hosted by West Virginia University.
