Greek Life
National Pan-Hellenic Council at Towson University
What is the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)?
The
NPHC is the governing council for seven
historically African-American
fraternities and sororities on campus. The member chapters of this council
work to encourage high scholastic achievement, service to
the community, promote unity, develop leadership skills,
enhance the educational and social life of minority communities, and
provide a forum for addressing items of mutual concern.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council was founded in May 1930
on the campus of Howard University. The main purpose of the
organization at the time was to form a coordinating body that would
allow member organizations to share ideas and develop community-wide
initiatives to positively impact the African-American community
at-large. Since then the focus of the organization has expanded to
include:
-
To assist college and university administrators in
attaining their educational objectives while enabling affiliate
organization chapters to entertain common cultural pursuits
-
To serve as a forum for the consideration of mutual
interest and cooperative ventures to the member organizations
-
To encourage local councils to concern them with
developing, implementing, and supporting programs designed to help
meet the needs of their respective communities
The national body of the NPHC consists of nine
historically African-American Greek-lettered organizations. They
are: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated (1906), Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (1908), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
Incorporated(1911), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated (1911), Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Incorporated (1913), Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,
Incorporated (1914), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (1920), Sigma
Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated (1922), and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity,
Incorporated (1963).
