Greek LifeHow Do I Join a Fraternity/Sorority?Step One - Research ALL chapters on campus All too often students decide to affiliate with a fraternity/sorority chapter without taking time to research the principles upon which the organization was founded, the general history of the organization, past members that have been active in the organization, and partnerships formed national/local charities and community service agencies. Additionally, one of the biggest mistakes interested students make is not investigating how members of the local chapter conduct themselves and determining whether those members apply the founding principles to their daily lives. Please take the time to identify the groups that you have interest in, click on Recognized Chapters, and do the research before you make any final decisions. In addition you should take the time to look over the Academic Requirements for all of our chapters so you are certain you qualify. Step Two - Find out the dates for recruitment activities All chapters on campus have very distinct membership processes. Some participate in what is known as "RUSH", which is a series of events that help introduce interested students to specific chapters in the Greek community. The Interfraternity Council fraternities and Panhellenic Association sororities participate in these series of events. The dates for "RUSH" are always posted around campus at the beginning of the semester, so make sure to look for advertisements. Some chapters participate in what is known as membership intake. These processes are different than those for "RUSH" in that the chapters host events individually, rather than in a collective forum. In order to get connected to these activities you must contact the chapters directly. All of the National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters and some of the Unified Greek Council chapters host membership intake. Step Three - Fill out the necessary paperwork All students interested in becoming members of a Greek-Letter organization at Towson University MUST fill out what is known as the Recruitment Registration Form. The purpose of this form is to ensure that all interested students have at least a 2.0 grade point average and are full-time students. Towson University mandates that all students who want to be involved in student-based organizations meet the requirements above. It is the policy of the Office of Student Activities to keep all recruitment registration forms confidential. No one besides the Greek Advisor will have access to these forms. Step Four - Learn all policies and procedures related to Greek Life All student-based organizations are governed by the Student Government Association and are required to abide by the Towson University Student Code of Conduct. Greek-Letter fraternities and sororities must do the same but there are a few other polices which are specific to Greek Life that must be followed as well. Please take the time read over the policies below before participating recruitment/new member/intake activities.
