Leadership and Civic Engagement encompasses active citizenship, community involvement, advocacy, awareness of social issues and injustices, and the development of personal and social responsibility. It requires students to involve themselves in society with the intent to better the world around them. There are many opportunities for students, faculty and staff to civically engage at Towson University.

The Department of Leadership and Civic Engagement sponsors the campus newspaper program, monthly New York Times Talk lunches, an annual Environmental Conference, and panels and debates on relevant issues. We also support faculty service-learning initiatives. Learn more about our initiatives.

The students, faculty and staff of Towson University are committed to being civically engaged with the greater Baltimore community. In 2008, Towson University was honored to have been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in both categories of: Curricular Engagement and Outreach & Partnership. This recognition confirmed the university's commitment to engaging with the community and has set the foundation for the programs offered through the Department of Civic Engagement. For the past three years Towson University has also been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, and earned a "with distinction" recognition in 2009.
