Topic: Do we need to teach students how to be civically engaged? Don’t we already present our students the knowledge they need to become productive, responsible citizens? Or does fostering citizenship development for 21st century youth require more than traditional classroom tools? What can - or should - we do in a time of limited resources and political polarization? Based on her just-published book, Dr. Alison R. M. McCartney will address these and other pressing questions for collegiate educators and administrators and present solutions for today’s collegiate environment. Format: Dr. Alison McCartney will begin by discussing “Teaching Civic Engagement: From Student to Active Citizen” and then open the discussion to the audience. Her presentation will be followed by a reception and book signing.
Dr. Alison McCartney is an associate professor of political science at Towson University and former director of the International Studies program. Her research and teaching interest include civic engagement and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has received several awards for her civic engagement work, including the Maryland-DC Campus Compact Service-Learning Scholarship Award and the University System of Maryland Regents Award for Mentoring.
