Study Abroad

Instruction and Assessment for English Language Learners, Portugal

July 14 - 24, 2009

Earn credit studying in Portugal in Summer 2009 with Towson University. The program will introduce students to the theory of second language literacy and provide information on how to work with English language learners.

The program includes attendance at the 16th European Conference on Reading: Discovering Worlds of Literacy being held in Braga, Portugal from July 19 - 22. The opportunity to attend this conference will be an outstanding professional development for all program participants. Other features include a city tour of Lisbon and a visit to a local language center.

The program is based in Braga - the third largest city in Portugal. Located in the northwest of Portugal, Braga is considered the most religious city in the country packed with Baroque churches and sanctuaries. Braga is a modern town steeped in history - often referred to as the Rome of Portugal.

Housing: Participants will stay in hotels with students sharing rooms with one or more classmates.

Instructor: Dr. Gilda Martinez, Towson University Educational Technology and Literacy Department.

Course: REED 370 or EDUC 632 Instruction and Assessment for English Language Learners (3 credits).

Cost: $3,300 includes tuition (3 credits), airfare, health insurance, housing, conference registration, academic visits and a city tour. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, meals, and personal expenses.

*The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

Application Deadline: DEADLINE EXTENDED -MARCH 25, 2009. Admission is on a rolling basis. Early application is advised as space is limited.

Application Process: Students must hold a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have a high school diploma or equivalent experience. Fill out an application (PDF) and submit it to the TU Study Abroad Office. $250 deposit required at time of application.

Non-TU undergraduate students must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application (PDF) Non-TU graduate students must also submit an Application for Graduate School (PDF) .
