PRE-DEPARTURE RESOURCES
How to get there
Group flights will be arranged for most faculty-led study abroad programs. If a group flight is part of the package, it will be mandatory to participate, unless you have made specific arrangements with the Adviser responsible for the program.
For programs when the group flight is optional or not included, students can choose to book their own flight but must arrive and depart according to the dates of the program. Students will be expected to make their own arrangements to meet up with the group at their destination. Students are encouraged to utilize student-based travel agencies that offer economical airfares including:
Students may want to consider purchasing Trip Cancellation benefits to cover any losses incurred when canceling or changing travel itineraries. A guide to shopping for travel insurance and a list of insurance carriers is available in the Resources section of the TU Study Abroad website.
Country Research
You should learn about the country where you are studying in order to minimize culture shock and begin to understand your host culture.
The U.S. State Department is a superb resource for international travel. They provide, free of charge, updated information on: the country, travel warnings, health and safety, overseas emergency advice etc. Check their website for Consular Information and Travel Warnings (if any) specific to the host country in which you will be studying.
There are many sources of information about your host country: books, movies, embassies, magazines etc. Travel guidebooks are an excellent resource for obtaining information on the host country. The Study Abroad Office strongly suggests that you purchase a guidebook before departure. We recommend:
- Lonely Planet Survival Kit Budget Guide Book
- Rough Guide Book
- Let’s Go Budget Guide Book
