Study Abroad
Crime and Punishment Cross Nationally, UK
Minimester 2010 (dates to be announced)
Study in London with Towson University in January 2010. Explore the difference and similarities between the U.S. and English experience of and response to crime. The course includes a comparative examination of histories of crime, crime rates, distributions of offenses, and social perceptions of crime and criminals including comparisons of the police, court and incarceration systems. Discover how the U.S. Criminal Justice system developed from the British model through first-hand experience.
The program is based in London, one of the liveliest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world and home to more than 7.7 million residents. With music and sports venues, art galleries, theaters, museums, and shops, this city has something for everyone. Program highlights include visits to the Crime Museum at Scotland Yard, the public gallery in the 'Old Bailey' to watch trials in session, local prison tours, and a guided London 'crime walk'. Housing is in modest, clean hotels with students sharing rooms with one or more classmates.
This course is open to all majors but must be taken for credit. Attendance at all lectures and site visits is mandatory. Students will be graded on the quality of their participation in the site visits in addition to the course assignments.
