Kinesiology 'Sugarball': Sport Business in the Global Marketplace, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic

Want to experience warm weather sports in the winter? Are you interested in the growing eco-tourism industry or seeing how many Latino and Caribbean baseball players train in the off season? Study abroad with TU Professor Ryan King-White in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic in Minimester 2012. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the cultural aspects of sport and exercise in global perspective through first-hand experience.
Students will spend time in San Juan in Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo in the Domincian Republic. The program features guest lectures from leading sport executives in a variety of sport and performance-related industries and includes visits to multinational sporting and entertainment venues. Highlights include attendance at local baseball games and a visit to El Yunque National Forest.
This course is for students interested in exercise science, sport management, international business, popular culture, sport tourism and global sport sales and sponsorship. Attendance at all lectures and site visits is mandatory. Students will be graded on the quality of their participation in site visits and assignments.

Course: KNES 285: Sport: A Cross Cultural Perspective (3 credits) and KNES 494: Sport and Human Performance in Global Perspective (3 credits).Students may earn credit for KNES 470 (3 credits) instead of KNES 285 but must complete additional coursework.
Graduate students enroll in KNES 594 (3 credits) and must complete an extended research paper on a topic of the student's choosing with advice from the instructor. Graduate students may be able to arrange an independent study with the permission of the instructor and the department.
Students may fulfill units toward their Latin American Studies elective requirements in consultation with the Latin American Studies program director prior to departure. TU students may receive Honors credit for their study abroad experience.
Costs: *$3,850 includes academic credit, housing, health insurance, travel between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, excursions, and daily breakfast. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, airfare to and from the U.S. (approx. $700), any meals not included, and personal expenses. Note: International airfare is not included in the program cost.
*The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.
Eligibility: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, a high school diploma or equivalent experience, and be at least 18 years old. Note: This trip involves moderate to occasionally intense physical exertion i.e. climbing (non-technical), walking (extended periods of two to three hours), and kayaking or white water rafting. Students in good physical health and who are normally physically active should encounter few difficulties beyond physical fatigue, however.
Application Process: Fill out the application and submit it to the TU Study Abroad Office. $250 deposit is required at time of application. Non-TU undergraduate students must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application. Non-TU graduate students must also submit an Application for Graduate School.
