Overseas Health Insurance Requirements
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I sign up?
All participants on Towson University Study Abroad Programs will be automatically enrolled.
Will I have proof of this coverage?
Yes, you will receive an ID card that includes contact information for plan services.
Do I need it? I have other insurance.
Most US health insurance plans have some limitations for treatment outside the US. Very few have medical evacuation repatriation or family reunion benefits. The adminstrator specializes in working with international medical claims and providers. This makes getting care while you are abroad, and addressing payment for that care, easier.
Don’t I have insurance through my host country?
Some do. In that situation, the TU Plan will “wrap around” what is provided by the host country (including medical evacuation, repatriation and family reunion).
Should I keep my current insurance?
Absolutely. The TU insurance plan is only active while you are abroad. You should maintain your US insurance to ensure continuous coverage for any pre-existing conditions.
Do I pay up front, or will the doctor accept my insurance? How do I make a claim?
Please refer to the CMI Claim Instructions and CMI Claim Form for details.
I plan on staying overseas after my program ends. Can I extend my coverage dates?
You can extend your coverage by contacting the enrollment administrator at CMI Insurance:
