PROGRAM FULL
May 26 - June 11, 2012
Earn credit while studying in Rome, Italy with Towson University in Summer 2011. Students will experience the art and architecture of the city of Rome from its earliest beginnings in antiquity to today. Explore the major monuments of ancient Etruria, including the magnificent tombs in Cerveteri and Tarquinia, and of imperial Rome, including the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon, with TU Professor Dr. Amy Sowder. The legacies of the classical tradition in the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods will be discussed in the course by walking through the hidden catacombs, visiting the magnificent Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica, the Villa Borghese, and many of the spectacular churches and fountains throughout the city.
Rome is Italy’s largest city with over 2.7 million residents. It is the third most visited tourist destination in the European Union, and its historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To complement the urban investigations, day trips to Florence, Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, and the stunning archaeological museums and archaeological sites in the Bay of Naples, including Pompeii and Herculaneum, are planned.
