The Playwright
Born in the United States of Cuban-Argentine-Spanish-Croatian
heritage, Svich brings a hybrid sensibility to her plays. For
Svich, however, that sensibilty which she describes as "bilingual,
multicultural, female" is always in flux. Svich works with
a variety of structural forms and theatrical styles, such as
poetry, music, ritual and aspects of traditional Western dramatic
structure in her plays. As in Alchemy/Blues, her plays often
explore contradictory impulses such as the longing to find home
and the desire to run away from home.*
Svich has been the recipient of a Thurber
House Fellowship, an NEA/TCG Playwriting Residency, a TCG/Pew
Observership Grant, and a Royal Court Theatre/ASK Theater Projects
Playwrights Exchange. Her other plays include: Any Place But
Here, staged at New York's Theater for the New City; The Archeology
of Dreams; Prodigal Kiss; and Fugitive Pieces among
others. Svich is also an editor, translator, and songwriter.
A complete list of her productions and publications is available
