David White attended New College
in Sarasota, Florida, where he focused his studies on storytelling
and solo performance. He received his M.A. from the University
of Missouri – Kansas City, and his Ph.D. from the University
of Missouri – Columbia. His dissertation Developing Playwright(s)
provided perspectives into the process of new play development
and self-dramaturgy. David has written and performed in numerous
solo performance pieces and taught solo performance at the National
Theater Institute. He has presented papers and lectured at universities
and regional conferences on the topics of playwriting, playwriting
and game shows, playwriting as oral tradition, new play development,
and dramaturgy. David has also been a respondent to plays at several
regional Kennedy Center American College Theater Festivals, a reader
for the national festival, and a respondent for ATHE’s New
Play Development Workshop. White’s plays have been produced
in university and regional theatres around the country, most recently,
Enough: Boston Theatre Marathon (2007), Alice in Wonderland: Beck
Center for the Arts, Cleveland (2007). His plays Trash, Ain’t
Nothin’ Quick ‘n Easy, Watersheds and Enough, form
the beginning of a series of nine plays about the citizens of the
rural town of Last Chance. As dramaturg, David has worked at the
O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Music Theater Conference
and Cabaret Conference. David served as Literary Manager and Director
of Educational Outreach for the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center
in Waterford, Connecticut for three seasons. He is a founding member
of Generous Company, a company dedicated to developing and producing
work in generous, collaborative and supportive environments. David
is Artistic Director of WordBRIDGE Playwrights Laboratory (www.wordbridge.org)
and is on the Theatre Arts Faculty at Towson University in Maryland.
