Dear ISTC 301 Student,

I am a doctoral candidate in the Instructional Technology program at Towson and am carrying out research on the various ways pre-service teacher candidates acquire skills utilizing technology in the classroom.  I am attempting to determine the degree to which ISTC 301 contributes to acquiring those skills.  Technology utilization plays a major role in today’s classrooms.  Your role in this project will be to take an online survey that asks you to assess yourself related to various uses and skills related to technology.  Eventually, this data may be used to improve the ISTC301 course at Towson University.

At the beginning of the semester, you will be asked to complete an online survey by the faculty member who is teaching your section of ISTC301.  The survey itself has questions having to do with technology utilization and classroom integration.  While it is recognized that most of you have limited experience related to some of these questions your input based on the honest self assessment of your current skills or proficiency will be of benefit to this study.  Then, at the end of the semester you will be asked to complete the same survey again.  This information will help me to determine how the ISTC 301 course effected your self assessment related to utilizing technology in the classroom.  There are no known risks or discomforts associated with this taking this survey.  The survey results will not be utilized in any way during the course itself.   Therefore, if you participate or decide not to participate in this survey, your status as a student in ISTC 301 will in no way be affected.  Your teacher will not see any of the results of this study at any time during the semester. Both surveys (pre and post course) will be confidential.

Participation in this study is voluntary.  All information from the surveys will remain strictly confidential.  Although the descriptions and findings may be published, at no time will your name be used.  You are at liberty to withdraw your consent to this research and discontinue participation at any time without prejudice.  If you have any questions after today, please feel free to call me, William Barnard at 410-790-5462 or my faculty sponsor, Dr. David Wizer at 704-6268, or contact Dr. Patricia Alt, Chairperson of the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Participants at Towson University at (410) 704-2236
