What is Community Engagement?
Community Engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching).
Community Engagement at Towson University includes engaged scholarship, service learning, civic engagement, community based partnerships, and other initiatives as defined above.
What is Community Outreach and Professional Service?
Community Outreach and Professional Service are also collaborative in nature and are imperative to our role as a major metropolitan university. The primary difference between outreach/service and engagement is the initiative or project is generated by the institution or faculty/staff member to provide expertise or knowledge to benefit the greater community.
