TU in the Community

Partnership Outcomes

The Cherry Hill Learning Zone is a mutually beneficial partnership that impacts both the community and Towson University. Cherry Hill residents benefit from the programs and services that are provided while Towson University students have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge outside of the classroom. Below are some of the results of this work.

Community Impact

Since 2005, TU has succeeded in bringing programs and services to Cherry Hill that benefit the community and produce real outcomes in the areas of education, health, safety, community and economic development.

  • 50% of Cherry Hill schools are no longer in need of corrective action
  • Cherry Hill and Towson University students produced an oral history collection
  • In the 2012-2013 academic year, Towson University faculty, staff, and students collected over $1,200 worth of clothing and toys for children and families in Cherry Hill.
  • 72 Towson students were recruited by the AmeriCorps VISTA for Cherry Hill Projects in the 2012-2013 academic year for volunteer projects and programs in Cherry Hill.
  • Towson University's Allied Health program secured a $60,000 grant from the USDA People’s Garden Initiative to develop new community gardens and health education programs in Cherry Hill.
  • The 2012-2013 AmeriCorps VISTA partnered with Higher Achievement, a nonprofit after-school program, to develop the Young Gardeners Program. The YGP provided weekly workshops on gardening and nutrition for 15 middle schools students. The VISTA won a $1,000 grant to support this project.

Enhanced Learning

In Cherry Hill, Towson students have the opportunity to take what they’ve learned inside the classroom outside into the real world. By engaging in the community, TU students gain practical hands-on experience that is invaluable to their education.
