The Cherry Hill Learning Zone is a mutually beneficial partnership that impacts both the community and Towson University. Cherry Hill residents benefit from the programs and services that are provided while Towson University students have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge outside of the classroom. Below are some of the results of this work.
Community Impact
Since 2005, TU has succeeded in bringing programs and services to Cherry Hill that benefit the community and produce real outcomes in the areas of education, health, safety, community and economic development.
50% of Cherry Hill schools are no longer in need of corrective action
Cherry Hill and Towson University students produced an oral history collection
The Partners in Academic and Life Success program served 25 children in its after-school program at Patapsco Elementary and provided health services to nearly 30 community residents and families at its spring health fair
Towson University faculty, staff, and students raised over $2000 in financial and in-kind contributions as part of a holiday fundraising effort in 2011 that benefitted children and families in Cherry Hill
Enhanced Learning
In Cherry Hill, Towson students have the opportunity to take what they’ve learned inside the classroom outside into the real world. By engaging in the community, TU students gain practical hands-on experience that is invaluable to their education.
“Being in Cherry Hill has been amazing and I’ve learned more than I could ever learn from any textbook.” ~ Emily Janiski, Teacher Intern Towson University
“[Towson University students] get a sense of how important they are in children’s lives and how much of a difference they can make.”
~ Dr. Ray Lorion, Dean College of Education
