The Spring 2011 Forum provided an arena for science and mathematics teachers, students interested in careers in science and mathematics, and scientists and mathematicians from academia and industry to meet, network, and hear about the research of nationally known scientists and mathematicians. It was also a gathering in which we all learned about the varied career paths of women scientists and mathematicians and consider some of the issues involved in the decision to enter the discipline.
We had a very exciting line-up of speakers this year. Dr. Patricia S. Steeg (Head, Women's Cancers Section Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology in the National Cancer Institute) who spoke about "Insights Into Careers in Medical Research: Molecular Characterization of Tumor Metastasis." Dr. Clare Muhoro (Department of Chemistry at Towson University) who spoke about "Organic Chemistry Can Help Solve Environmental Problems." And Dr. Dianne P. O'Leary ( Computer Science Department at the University of Maryland) who spoke about "Mathematics and Computer Science in Words and Images."
