1.     What is the Writing Lab?

The Lab is a tutoring service located in Linthicum Hall, room 308. We provide individual writing help at any stage of the writing process.

2.     Who are the tutors?

Undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional staff.

3.     What if my student has special needs?

Our staff is prepared and eager to help all Towson students, including those with special needs.

Please contact the Writing Lab Director, Dr. Deborah Shaller (410-704-3426, dshaller@towson.edu) if you have any questions or concerns.

4.     What happens during a tutoring session?

With your student, tutors review the assignment guidelines, course syllabus, previously graded assignments, and notes or a rough draft.

Tutors will discuss your student’s writing process, and help the student identify his or her strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

At the end of each session, tutors complete a form that will indicate the topics the tutor and student covered. This form is a convenient way for the Writing Lab staff to communicate with you.

5.     Who can I call with questions about a tutoring session or about the Lab in general?

The Lab’s director, Dr. Deborah Shaller welcomes your calls and questions.  You can reach her by e-mail—dshaller@towson.edu—or by phone, 410-704-2655.

6.     Can you help my students with grammar skills?

Tutors can help with grammar problems in the context of an assignment, but tutoring sessions aren’t designed to review grammar fundamentals.

If your student needs help with sentence-level grammar skills, please contact Dr. Margaret Benner, the Writing Support Program’s Director, at 410-704-2857 or visit http://towson.edu/writingsupportprogram
