Mathematics Placement Test

The Department of Mathematics at Towson University has developed its own placement test.  [ Note that this test is not the same as the placement testing administered by the Academic Achievement Center.  If you have questions about the Academic Achievement Center placement test, contact Ms. Stefanie H. Hunt at 410-704-4027. ]

This is not a test you will pass or fail.  The purpose of this test is to measure the required mathematical skills needed for success in various levels of mathematics courses at Towson University.  Some students choose majors that require one or more particular mathematics courses; others only take mathematics courses to satisfy a general university requirement.  In either case, the placement test recommends an appropriate course for you.

The test consists of five multiple-choice subtests: basic skills, basic algebra, advanced algebra, trigonometry, and calculus readiness.  It is administered and scored completely on a computer, and you will receive the results immediately.

The Mathematics Placement Test may be taken in either the Satellite Lab located in the 7800 York Road Building, room 109 (410-704-2130); or in the Office of Technology Services's PC Lab in Cook Library, room 35 (410-704-2457).  Please call for operating hours before you come to take the test.

Taking the placement test does not require any knowledge of how to use a computer.  You are permitted to use pencil, paper and a calculator (but not a graphing calculator) to work out problems.

Your test results will remain confidential.  They will not become part of your permanent record, nor will they be shared with the mathematics instructors.

After completing the test, an advisement letter will be printed that provides advice on the highest level course you should take, according to your major and your performance on the test.  This letter must be brought to your advisor during your registration appointment.  You and your advisor should discuss the results of this letter along with other relevant information before registering for your initial mathematics course.

Preparing for the Test

A set of sample test items appears here.

Reviewing and practicing for the test will help you recall the mathematics that you have learned and identify areas where you need additional review.  Topics never learned should not concern you at this time.  After taking this sample placement test, you will find the correct answers here
