Background

The Cydonian colony begins in the calls for privatization in the 1970s and the "free-market" experiments of the 1990s and, in many ways, represents the desultory culmination of these trends.  "Cydonia" begins with a new religious movement (NRM) from Utah claiming telepathic communication with a Mars rock retrieved from melting glaciers on Earth.  After years of growth Earth-side, the cult receives the revelation that it must "return" to Mars in order to fulfill its destiny.  However, even in an era of LEO stations and lunar mining, such an effort is fantastically expensive, so the Mars cult must attract other co-colonizers.  These are a varied and even motley crew, a combination of other religious groups and for-profit speculators hoping to capitalize on the "Face on Mars" (however debunked) for a Mars tourist trade that might never get off the ground anyway.  Never mind the bunch of applied anthropologists who sign on to study the formation of the new community.  Add to that the suspicious, hidden agendas of  groups B and D, and you've got contretemps waiting to happen.  For the time being, the Cydonians are hunkered down in lava tubes crisscrossing Cydonia, extracting some raw materials and water from beneath the surface.  It won't be long, though, before they try contacting other Mars colonists and attempt to spread their message.  Good luck, Cydonia!

Class Syllabus

Group A

Our mission is that we are former Mormons from Utah who came across a rock from mars which we believe communicates to us telepathically about what we are supposed to believe and how we are supposed to live.  We are going to Mars to prove that our belief system and the mars rock are in fact real.  Also we want a place where we can go to practice our beliefs in freedom, and to see where our holy rock originated from.

Our group is made up of the leader of our religion who tells us what the rock says to us, the cult historian who records the beliefs and the rocks teachings, the preacher who's responsibility it is to spread our beliefs, an engineer to help build our community, and a farmer to grow food for us to eat

Group B

On Mars our group will run a restaurant called "Down to Earth." This restaurant will be an upscale restaurant. We will serve a mixture of food that is native to Mars as well as popular dishes from Earth. Steve will be our cook, Ashley will be the waitress, Claire will be the hostess, and Brian will be a bus boy. This restaurant will require shoes and shirt in order for service. The restaurant may seem like a legit business, but there may be more to this establishment then just food.

Group C

We are a group of Ninja-like heroes concerned with the security of the population. Our mission is to protect the friendly Martians from all evils including menacing worm monsters hidden in the canals of Mars.

Our members and their abilities are:

Kikla- A child of nature who has learned to master all natural phenomena. Although her powers are somewhat weakened on Mars than they were on Earth, she can use her abilities to freeze evil creatures, scald them, or confuse them with dust storms.

Eve- The mother of the Earthly human race who has been cryogenically frozen in an iceberg for aeons, who is awakened by Maryshoes, the scientist/anthropologist, and brought to Mars stronger than ever before. She can shoot laser beams from her fingertips to splice the worm monsters and other evil beings into little pieces of varying shapes and sizes.

Maryshoes- The genius behind Eve's laser shooting. An anthropologist of human evolution, she is the one that discovered Eve and how she could channel the laser beams, a power unique to ancient humans. Maryshoes will use her keen astuteness to strategize the use of each team member's power to defeat all evil.

Agrove1- Provides for the common defense of the group. She has cultivated the ability to create a strong force field around us, should the worm monsters or other creatures get too close. She also possesses x-ray vision, which gives insight into our adversaries' weak spots and hide-outs.

Group D

Group D is a unique group because we have but three members. Raptor2155 is in charge of studying other’s personal descriptions, and report his findings to the group. In this way, we hope to learn more about the people colonizing Mars. Tutosh will study “artifacts” found on different people around the colony. This will serve two purposes: firstly, we will be able to tell what kinds of objects are of importance to the colonists, and secondly, these relics can be sold in order to fund our research further. Tutosh will also report findings to the group. Myriad will oversee the group’s research and try to analyze them in order to formulate hypotheses about the colonists of Mars. Our group mission is to better understand the type of people living on this new Mars colony and to eventually provide them with services based on the r! esearch we have done.
