Academic Advising for Transferring Students

As a new transferring student, you want to get off to a great start and have a good sense of where you are heading. Towson requires students to create and file a Degree Completion Plan that will map out your path to graduation and take into account all of the requirements for your degree. Assistance from your academic department and your advisor is available to help you put together your plan.

Unlike some of the support services offered to students at Towson, the Academic Advising Program is required for every student regardless of major or program of study, meaning you must meet with an advisor at least once every semester. As a transfer student, knowing who your advisor is, how to contact him or her and understanding what role they will play in your academic career here at Towson University is critical to your success.

Check your Student Center at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester to see if you have been assigned an advisor. Their name will be visible on the right side of your Student Center in the box entitled “Program Advisor”. Once you see a name in that box, you can click on the “details” link to locate their email address.

If you do not see an advisor assigned to you two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester, you should immediately contact the department of your major and request an advisor to be assigned.

Once you have an advisor, proactively reach out to him or her and introduce yourself as a new advisee who just transferred to Towson. It is important to establish a good relationship with your advisor as soon as you can.

You cannot register for classes for the upcoming semester until you meet with your advisor. Once they have helped you plan out your course selections, they will remove your hold and you will be able to enroll in coursework.

Write these down! Once you know your enrollment date, you should meet with your advisor at least two weeks prior to this date. Please do not wait until the last minute to meet with your advisor as they can only see so many people during the day.
