Certificate Programs

This applied certificate program is designed to build your expertise in the use of multiple venues of action research necessary for creating successful school communities that advance student achievement. The program’s core courses are designed to make you an effective researcher who is comfortable with multiple assessment and evaluation strategies. You will also learn to do the following:

  • obtain and utilize data to inform decisions for school improvement
  • facilitate development, articulation, implementation and stewardship of a vision that promotes student success
  • provide effective instruction, discern and implement best practices in teaching and learning, and design professional plans for faculty and staff
  • anticipate and manage change
  • be effective in collaboration and team building essential for responding to diversity and mobilizing community resources
  • understand legal issues and ethical behaviors required to act with integrity and fairness while conducting research
  • develop an interdisciplinary approach to examine educational issues through school-based inquiry and professional practice
  • develop and promote the integration of technology, research, and information resources into curriculum design, pedagogy, and professional practice to ensure student success


The Autism Studies Post-Baccalaureate Certificate provides you with the knowledge and skill set required to work with both children and adults across the autism spectrum. Learn about the typical traits of individuals on the spectrum, their gifts and challenges, co-occurring conditions, epidemiology, evidence-based interventions, classroom and workplace strategies, family impact, and research and key policy issues. This certificate validates your commitment to working in the field and prepares you to broaden your role as an educator, early childhood professional, mental health professional, occupational therapist, speech-language pathologist, agency staff and disability specialist, researcher, advocate or policymaker.


The Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Classroom Post-Baccalaureate Certificate provides a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges of students with ASD and their families and the most effective, evidence-based practices and strategies to support the learning and social success of these students in school and the community.


The certificate in community engagement and leading for school change will provide students with:

  • A sociological understanding of the race and class dynamics shaping the communities that they serve
  • Tools for developing an asset-based understanding of the students and families with which they work, and
  • Skills for making changes to improve the ways in which schools serve and are accountable to their students, families, and communities.


The Administrator I certification, in addition to a master’s degree, is required in Maryland for assistant principals and principals. Following completion of the Educational Administrator I Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, students submit their stamped transcript to the Maryland State Department of Education to receive the certificate. 


Are you looking for a quick and effective way to improve your skills in utilizing technologies in classroom instruction? Are you interested in the newest trends and emerging technologies in K-12 education? If you answer yes to any of those questions, then the post-baccalaureate certificate program in educational technology would be a great choice for you. This program is designed for K-12 educators to learn and lead technology integration practices in schools.


Master's Programs

The needs of gifted and creative learners often differ from those of the general population. Our program will teach you to identify, serve and work with gifted and creative learners from all backgrounds. You’ll gain knowledge and skills in:

  • developmentally appropriate instruction for advanced learners
  • family/community outreach and support
  • instructional models and strategies for developing the talents, creativity and problem-solving skills of children


For educational professionals who are interested in exploring the role of technology in classroom teaching, or leading the design, application and implementation of emerging technologies and digital learning at the school, district or state level.  Students in this program work with cutting edge classroom technologies and master practical and theoretically-based strategies for effectively using technology to improve student learning.


For professionals who wish to pursue a career as a School Library Media Specialist. Discover the exciting combination of literacy, technology and teaching. Support teachers to design and implement innovative digitally rich learning opportunities in a school setting (Certification available to Maryland residents). 


The Master of Education in reading education program is designed to prepare reading teachers and reading specialists, primarily for PreK-12 education but also for community colleges, industry, adult education programs, commercial education centers and private practice.

The program will prepare you to:

  • provide specialized literacy instruction and assessment, in cooperation with other professionals, to students at all levels
  • provide literacy services individually and in groups
  • communicate with colleagues, parents and the community about literacy issues, and conduct professional development workshops on literacy topics
  • coach and mentor colleagues
  • advocate for literacy development
  • interpret literacy research


Maryland, like the rest of the nation, is experiencing a severe shortage of teachers of students with ASD. The Teacher as Leader in ASD M.Ed. program offers advanced training for professionals with certification in special education or a related field, such as psychology, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy and social work.

The program offers you:

  • knowledge and leadership skills you’ll need to understand core areas of impairment
  • opportunities to engage in and apply evidence-based practices in instructional and classroom management strategies
  • support from a cohort of fellow Towson graduate students who are experienced teachers
  • experienced faculty-mentors committed to your success
  • strategies for collaborating and engaging with families, communities and public/private agencies
  • experience learning how to use innovative technology and training in the implementation of University Design for Learning to reach all


Graduates of the MAT program are eligible for teacher certification in the general education tracks of early childhood, elementary and secondary education.

  • Early childhood education prepares students to teach Pre-K through grade three.
  • Elementary education prepares students to teach grades one through six.
  • Secondary education prepares students to teach grades seven through 12 in biology, chemistry, earth-space science, English, mathematics, physics, or history/social studies. 
  • World Languages prepares students to teach Pre-K through grade 12 in French or Spanish.


The master’s degree in Transformational Educational Leadership (with embedded courses for Administrator I certification) prepares you to be a dynamic and effective leader in America’s schools. We promote an expanded view of leadership that includes leading from the classroom as well as the traditional school administrator pathway.


Reduced Rate Tuition

Through a contractual agreement with your employer, tuition for courses are discounted. You may request full tuition reimbursement for which you are eligible after successful completion of the course by following the process managed by your employer. After payment and reimbursement, most students will not incur any tuition cost.

The TU application fee of $45 is waived.  Participants are responsible for purchasing course texts. A required electronic portfolio software program, with a one-time fee of $113, will be used in all College of Education graduate programs.
