Dance Technique

Dance Technique classes rotate among ballet, modern, jazz, and West African. This variety of technique classes will offer campers the opportunity to work on fundamental movements, to develop an understanding of musical rhythms, and, most important, to build self-confidence. The supportive atmosphere and encouraging instructors will help campers learn to express themselves through dance.

personal development

Personal Development

Personal Development classes are conducted in a workshop setting that explores issues such as peer pressure, proper nutrition, self-esteem, and decision-making. The class encourages campers to learn about themselves through introspective exercises framed in role-play and games. Ailey’s Personal Development instructor helps campers identify individual values and goals and addresses how to respond to external pressures from friends, family members, and society at large. The discussions that take place during these classes are instrumental in aiding children to translate lessons about personal responsibility into real-life choices and actions.

creative communication

Creative Communication

Creative Communication provides a space in which campers can express themselves through writing and visual art exercises. This class offers campers the chance to explore writing, visual arts, and other creative forms through which to express their thoughts and feelings. Projects vary, ranging from the creation of representative masks to the composition and performance of poems, from puppet making to drawing and painting. All projects aim to reinforce campers’ self-confidence and highlight their individual strengths while encouraging them to articulate their personal dreams, challenges, and goals.

Techniques of Performance

Techniques of Performance is a class designed to provide campers with a greater understanding of dance beyond the technical steps. Lessons include the history of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and its leaders including Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, and Robert Battle. Preparation for the end-of-camp presentation also begins in this class as campers learn about performance etiquette, stage make-up, and production elements such as lighting and sound.
