How did you find out about this internship?

I had volunteered before at St. Vincent de Paul, and I was offered an internship position here.

What advice on the internship application process would you give to another TU student interested in this internship?

The application process is very quick and easy. Once you have completed your application you’re required to pass a background check and have your fingerprints scanned.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

As an intern I worked alongside a group instructor who is an educator. Each day I assisted with enrichment activities, which may include setting up, explaining the activities, and participating in the activities. As an intern I also learned management skills. If there were times where the group instructor was not there or had to leave for whatever reason, I was next in line to lead the group.

What did you find most rewarding at your internship?

As an intern, I got the chance to work with children and be able to give my time to help serve them. What was most rewarding was seeing the smiles on the children’s faces every morning as they arrived.

What were the challenges you faced in your internship?

The challenges I faced in my internship were minimal, but the greatest challenge was saying goodbye to the children once the program ended. The program is eight weeks long and after eight weeks you really develop a bond with the children in your group.

If another student at TU was interested in your internship next year, what skills would you recommend they develop in the coming semesters to prepare?

To be successful at this particular internship, you have to have a love for working with children. Working with children is not always easy, so it is a must that you are patient and understanding. Strong communication and verbal skills would be a requirement. It is also important that you are a leader and model positive behavior because children are like sponges and will mimic your behavior.
