How did you find this internship?

I found this internship through a faculty referral.

What advice on the internship application process would you give to another TU student interested in this internship?

Show creativity on the application with previous work done. Be honest about things you have or have not done and show how open you are to learn. Be assertive to show that no matter what task is given, you will make sure the job is done correctly.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

I was an intern under the Best Practice team for Stanley Black and Decker. This team was involved in training and assisting all the engineers and other CAD designers on how to properly use the CATIA software. With this software, we created all the tools that we use on the computer. Also, we use the software to constrain and compare all the components inside of a tool to make sure everything fits properly. We made sure everything was created and used with our "Best Practices" because you can design a tool in multiple different ways, but a lot of the time we reuse a drill from one project and slightly tweak it for another project. Therefore, if it was made properly, designing new tools becomes fast and easy without having to start from scratch.

What did you find most rewarding in your internship?

It was rewarding being able to see the projects that I worked on be on the shelves of Home Depot or Lowes. It's great to see the progress from idea to a consumer’s being able to buy the product. Also, working with other engineers on a team was a great experience to get a real feel for the work environment and how projects progress while working with others.

What were the challenges you faced in your internship?

Being able to juggle multiple projects at once and timing everything accordingly was a challenge. Also, always having to be aware of updates in the project being able to communicate with the team so that everyone was in sync was challenging as well. Finally, making sure projects were completed on schedule was another challenge.

If another student at TU was interested in your internship next year, what skills would you recommend they develop in the coming semesters to prepare?

I would recommend practicing speaking with a group of people and being able to relay easily the information you are trying to share. You never want to confuse your team with the way you say something. Be very detail-oriented, whether that be in a presentation or an email. Making sure that you double-check all work done is key so that you don't share any incomplete information or anything that should need more done to it. Always be early to a meeting, always.
