How did you find this internship?

This position was a placement as part of the education program.

What advice on the internship application process would you give to another TU student interested in this internship?

Come into the internship with an open mind to absorb all of the information you can from the professionals. Being in the classroom is the only way to prepare a future teacher, and this internship was a great opportunity to learn just what kind of teacher I want to be. It is best to come in, take in information and keep opinions to yourself, as you will be able to judge if your mentor’s teaching practices are for you or not.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

As an intern, most of my job was to observe the mentor teacher as much as possible to see teaching  styles and best fits. I would also develop my own lessons that I would teach to the class and receive feedback about what worked well and what did not. I also sat in on meetings that were in my mentor’s daily schedule as they are important learning opportunities.

What did you find most rewarding in your internship?

I have learned so much from each experience I have had at each internship placement. There have been things I have learned that I want to do in the classroom as well as what I know I do not want to do in the classroom. But the most rewarding part of each internship is having a student that you are able to reach in a way that another teacher cannot. It takes a special person to be able to get through to some kids. There is no better feeling than being the right teacher for that student.

If another student at TU was interested in your internship next year, what skills would you recommend they develop in the coming semesters to prepare?

As an education major, I talk with many of the members of my cohort and many other students that are lower level in the same major. I ensure that each internship will teach them so much about the future teacher they are going to be. There is no internship that is easy if it is a good one. Getting the most out of the internship involves following everything you are supposed to be doing and attending all of the extra activities that you can to gain knowledge in different areas. In my internship I kept a journal reflecting on my experience. Keeping this journal showed me what I think I could have done better and what I really liked that worked well in the classroom.
