While she started her academic career with the intent to become a high school science teacher, Dr. Werts decided to take her love for all things health related a step further. When studying for her first MS degree she also discovered she had a knack for databases and decided to combine health and informatics for her doctoral degree. Dr. Werts also practices Shiatsu Acupressure and other forms of Asian Bodywork Therapy. She continues to hold a Maryland state license in massage therapy (CMT) and a national certification in Chinese Medicine and Asian Bodywork Therapy (NCAAOM Dipl. ABT). She is a guest lecturer at the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Werts has taught a variety of classes on the college and adult education levels from Introduction to Systems Analysis to Exercise Prescription and almost everything in between. She most enjoys lecturing about culture and community health. She has worked on academic and research related projects about nutrition related diseases (obesity, diabetes and hypertension) with the National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Family Medicine.

Dr. Werts came to Towson in 2007 as a visiting professor after many years of adjunct teaching and owning her own health education business. She was hired as a new assistant professor in 2008 and will begin her tenure track appointment in Fall 2008. She is a Maryland Higher Education Commission grant awardee. She enjoys martial arts, gardening, quiet time with her family, and home improvement projects. She practically lives at the Home Depot.
