At Towson, you will gain the linguistic capabilities needed to be a responsible citizen of the world. Study the language, literature and culture of a range of countries while developing your oral and written communication skills.
Our curriculum prepares you for language acquisition and written and oral proficiency that will serve you well throughout your life — from career-related language and cultural skills to preparing for teaching or graduate study to linguistic enrichment. Course work helps you to relate to people of different cultures and to communicate successfully in a variety of contexts.
In-person learning, web-enhanced courses and experiential learning through study abroad immersion, practicum, internships, and independent study opportunities reinforce the acquisition of new knowledge. Service learning and civic engagement are emphasized in the development of critical analysis, problem-solving, teamwork and effective oral and written communication skills necessary in the 21st century workplace.
The department offers placement testing for students wishing to enroll in a foreign language course who do not already have college credit for the language.

Each year, TU students participate in the Washington Model Organization of American States with universities from across North and South America.
A children’s book on multiculturalism, Bundle of Secrets: Savita Returns Home/Un hatillo de secretos: Savita regresa a casa, was translated into Spanish in an interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Education: Isabel Castro, Mubina Kirmani, Judith Guerrero and Gilda Martínez.
