Self-advising is an advising alternative for eligible students who are comfortable planning and monitoring their own academic progress.

Students are not eligible to use self-advising if they are:

  • 1st semester transfer students
  • FYE students
  • pre-MCOM students whose overall GPA is 2.5 or lower
  • seniors who only have one term left before graduation

In choosing self-advising, the student accepts responsibility for knowing the academic requirements of his/her own degree plan. It is NOT a complete replacement for individual advising that may need to periodically occur as dictated by the Department of Mass Communication and/or university policy or practice. Participating in self-advising does not preclude students from seeking individual advising in the future.

The self-advising form allows the department to lift the advising hold from your student account. It will be reviewed for completion and accuracy, and will not be accepted unless all of the required information has been completed.

We will make every effort to have the hold flag lifted prior to your registration deadline, but please allow up to two business days for your form to be reviewed. It is your responsibility to verify the removal of the advising hold flag prior to registration.

Upon completing the form, sign and date and deliver it to the Mass Communication Student Service Center in Media Center 005. The hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
