Brian Brunsman is a double bassist, composer, and improviser living in Baltimore. He recently graduated from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where he studied double bass with Michael Formanek, and composition with Dr. Judah Adashi. He also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Towson University where he studied under Jeff Reed, Dave Ballou, and Jim McFalls. During his time at Towson he had the opportunity to work with artists such as Craig Taborn, Gerald Cleaver, Ellery Eskelin, Drew Gress, and John Hollenbeck.
As a leader, Brunsman released his first album in November 2013 with his trio Memetics on Baltimore-based independent label Strong Records. He also currently leads the 17-piece Station North Jazz Orchestra, an ensemble dedicated to playing new works by local composers, and is a founding member of Friday Night Book Club, a 12-piece chamber orchestra that focuses on interdisciplinary collaborations with film and dance. He was recently named curator of Out Of Your Head, a bi-weekly improvised music series in Baltimore. Also active as a bass guitarist, Brunsman performs and records with Super City, Lush Life, Wendel Patrick, and many others.
