Staff Mentorship Program

Towson University’s Staff Mentorship Program offers two mentor tracks that aim to enhance the onboarding experience of our new hire staff, who are just beginning their journey at Towson University, or to contribute to the professional development of our existing staff, who have been at the university for at least a year.

Tracks 

New Hire Track

Aiming to enhance the onboarding experience, this track gives new hire staff the opportunity to meet with an experienced staff member in their division within the first two weeks of employment. A divisional mentor will be assigned to them. This track helps bridge the learning gap between Connections (New Hire Orientation) and the onboarding experience delivered by their supervisor as noted below.

Professional Track

Offering existing employees an opportunity to develop their professional capacity by collaborating with experienced and knowledgeable staff. Mentors will assist their mentee(s) with developing professional goals by helping to broaden their resources and sharing knowledge and expertise. Staff interested in becoming a mentor or a mentee as a part of the Professional track can contact Training & Development at . Mentors and mentees must also be available to attend a program orientation before the beginning of the semester.

Roles and Responsibilities 

Mentor Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate an appreciation for the university’s mission, values and goals
  • Schedule uninterrupted time with your mentee at least once a month
  • Support and encourage your mentee’s development
  • Broaden the mentee’s professional network and resources
  • Offer guidance on professional development, social activities and volunteer opportunities
  • Use active listening and questioning techniques
  • Share “lessons learned” from personal experiences
  • Provide frank, but kind feedback
  • Create a supportive environment and maintain confidentiality

Mentee Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Commit to your professional development
  • Assume responsibility for acquiring and improving your skills and knowledge
  • Be honest and open about your goals, expectations, challenges and concerns
  • Actively listen to your mentor and ask questions
  • Seek advice, opinion and feedback from your mentor
  • Come to meetings prepared with a clear idea of what topics you want to discuss
  • Show respect for your mentor’s time and resources
  • Apply what you learned back on the job
  • Maintain confidentiality
