The Maryland National Guard Readiness Center in Sykesville will be named after Retired Major General Linda Singh, Towson University’s Leader-in-Residence.

“This is a small token of our appreciation for General Singh’s incredible legacy of service,” Governor Larry Hogan said as the Maryland Department of Public Works unanimously approved the proposal Wednesday.

Singh, who grew up in Frederick County, had a military career that spanned more than 30 years in both the enlisted and officer ranks. She had a combat tour during Operation Enduring Freedom and became the first black woman to be the adjutant general of Maryland National Guard in 2015.

She retired from the National Guard in the fall of 2019 and joined TU in early 2020. President Kim Schatzel established the Leader-in-Residence program to build Towson University’s capacity around innovative leadership development. The LIR program brings in nationally recognized leaders to share their experience and insights with faculty, staff, students, and alumni through teaching and academic research, seminars, and panel discussions around leadership on campus.

She was also honored Oct. 16 with a portrait unveiling at the Maryland Readiness Center, where Governor Hogan announced his intention to change the Readiness Center's name.

"I was not expecting this," Singh said at the event. "It is an honor because this is as close to home as I can get. My home where I grew up is down the street… This is home ground for me."
