Director at TU lends expertise for national research update
Romy Hübler shapes next-generation competency model for community engagement professionals
Director of TU's Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility, Romy Hübler has been named a Campus Compact Research Fellow--a prestigious position from which she will join 21 colleagues across the country to field-test and refine a national competency model to reflect the evolving landscape of higher education and community partnership work.
Their work, led by Lina Dostilo from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, will result in an updated version of the landmark 2017 publication The Community Engagement Professional in Higher Education: A Competency Model for an Emerging Field, which established a shared framework for defining the knowledge, skills and dispositions essential to community engagement professionals in higher education, such as staff and faculty members. Hübler was a key contributor on the 2017 publication, which helped advance the professionalization of the field, and the fellows plan to publish an updated version of the book in 2027.
At TU, Dr. Hübler supports students, faculty and staff in developing civic agency and deepening their engagement with local communities. Her national leadership further positions Towson University at the forefront of community engagement practice and scholarship, ensuring that institutions have the tools and guidance needed to build equitable, responsive and community-centered initiatives.
Campus Compact continues to empower colleges and universities across the country to advance their civic missions by partnering with communities to address complex social challenges and promote equity, justice and shared prosperity.
