College of Business and Economics expands specialized degree offerings with standalone majors
Several former business administration concentrations shift into distinct majors, helping students better showcase expertise, career goals
Beginning this fall, Towson University’s College of Business and Economics (CBE) will offer students a broader array of specialized degree programs as several concentrations within the business administration major have transitioned to standalone Bachelor of Science majors.
The change, recently approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), does not alter curriculum requirements. Instead, it updates program names to better reflect students’ areas of study and professional preparation.
Previously, CBE was home to four undergraduate business majors, including a business administration program that housed 11 concentrations. With the changes taking effect this fall, students will be able to graduate with degrees that more directly align with their academic focus, increasing the college’s business-related majors from four to 10.
For example, a student who previously earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a concentration in marketing will now graduate with a Bachelor of Science in marketing. Similar changes apply to programs in finance, financial planning, business analytics, business economics and project management.
The updated degree structure is designed to provide several benefits:
- specific diplomas for current students that clearly communicate expertise to employers and graduate schools
- easily identified academic pathways for prospective students that match their interests and goals
The changes also strengthen recognition of CBE programs among employers, recruiters, graduate schools and professional organizations, which often more readily recognize specialized degrees.
The following programs have transitioned from business administration concentrations to standalone majors:
- business analytics
- business economics
- finance (includes tracks in corporate finance and investments)
- financial planning
- marketing
- project management
The bachelor’s in business administration remains a degree program and will now include four concentrations: leadership and management, international business, human resource management and entrepreneurship.
Other existing programs, including accounting, economics and business systems and processes, remain unchanged.
The transition reflects CBE’s continued effort to align academic programs with student interests, industry expectations and evolving career pathways while maintaining the high-quality curriculum students have come to expect.
