Meet TU's new CFO Kofi Ofori
A seasoned higher education finance leader shares his vision for long-term sustainability
Towson University recently welcomed Kofi N. Ofori as its new senior vice president and chief financial officer. As TU builds on its momentum and advances its strategic priorities, he will play a key role in guiding financial and administrative operations while supporting long-term sustainability.
In this Q&A, Ofori shares what drew him to TU, his leadership approach and what excites him most about joining the university community.
What drew you to TU and made you want to take on this role at this moment?
I’ve spent more than 20 years in higher education finance, and TU stood out to me because of the tangible outcomes it delivers for students. The impact of its educational opportunities, along with a commitment to student success and access, are truly exceptional in the region, and that matters to me. I was also drawn to the university’s focus on inclusive excellence and its strong institutional foundation. TU is clearly well positioned for its next phase of growth, and I’m excited to contribute to that momentum and partner with colleagues across the university to ensure our financial strategy supports continued success.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I’d describe it as strategically inclusive. I believe the best outcomes come from bringing the right people into conversations early and often. I don't operate in silos and see my role as connecting strategy, resources and people to achieve institutional priorities through collaboration and information sharing across the enterprise. As CFO, I view myself as a partner to the institution, which means listening closely, understanding the needs of faculty, staff and students and helping translate those needs into a sustainable financial and operating strategy.
What are your early priorities as you get started?
My immediate focus is to listen and learn. I’m meeting with stakeholders across academic, administrative and student-facing areas to understand their priorities and challenges. I am focused on how finance can better support the work across the institution in a more holistic way. The key is long-term financial sustainability.
What might people be surprised to learn about you outside of work?
Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wonderful wife and two young sons. I’m also a contemporary artist. I paint regularly, which helps me stay balanced. I love all things design and am into cars as well.
What message would you like to share with the TU community as you begin your role?
TU is a gem in the higher ed space. It offers a vibrant campus experience and delivers a high-quality education that transforms lives. I’m honored to join this community and to contribute to building on its strong foundation. My commitment is to be a collaborative partner across the institution, supporting both immediate priorities and long-term financial sustainability. Ultimately, my job is to support TU’s mission.
Have you discovered any favorite spots on campus or in the area yet?
I’m still exploring! I’ve spent most of my time in my office so far, but I did visit the University Store and am looking forward to visiting the Center for the Arts and its gallery spaces as well as spending more time in the University Union once everything is open in the fall. Off campus, I’ve already enjoyed visiting Belvedere Square.
We’ve heard Maryland feels like home for you. Can you share more about that connection?
Maryland is very personal to me. I spent some of my early years in Baltimore, and it’s where I built many of my closest friendships and connections. I have deep roots in the area, with friends and family who are an important part of my life. Over the course of my career, I’ve lived in several states, but I’ve always been drawn back to Maryland. When I accepted this role, it was a deliberate decision to return, put down roots and raise my family here. It’s a special place with incredible diversity, creativity and strong institutions.
