Finding harmony in the Towson University Marching Band
Get an up-close look at the tight-knit community of the TU Marching Band who is heading to NYC for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
In 1979, the Towson University music department established what is now known as the "World-Famous" Towson University Marching Band (TUMB).
Since its beginnings, it has performed at a variety of events across the country, becoming known for its high-caliber musical performances and visual entertainment.
It's so well renowned that in 2027 the TUMB will return to New York City to perform in the 101st Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Following this year's Homecoming game, the TUMB held its annual postgame concert. Afterward, TU President Mark Ginsberg shared the news with band members in front of friends, family and TUMB alumni.

We're with the band
The TUMB is committed to fostering student success, developing leadership skills and promoting the university through music. Beyond performances, members build connections through Zumba sessions, activities throughout the year and a shared commitment to supporting one another.
With thousands of alumni, the TUMB has built a community that members describe as a second family. Many say the band was one of the reasons they chose to attend TU.
In the video below, current members share how the band has helped them build relationships that will last a lifetime. They also offer a glimpse into what it’s like to take the field on Saturdays at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.
The band’s style
The TUMB is a contemporary, corps-style, university athletic band that learns one halftime show each season. This model allows the band to perform high-quality musical arrangements while incorporating sophisticated, contemporary drill techniques into its shows.
It features more than 200 members across its brass, woodwind, battery percussion, front ensemble percussion and color guard sections. Membership is open to all TU students, including non-music majors.
Support the Towson University
Marching Band
Preparations for the 2027 parade will begin immediately. Participation will require extensive planning, travel and fundraising to support student transportation, lodging, meals and equipment costs associated with the trip to New York City.
The university is inviting alumni, friends, families, community members and supporters of the arts to help make the experience possible for every student performer.
