Towson University’s continued dedication to achieving carbon neutrality and advancing sustainability has earned TU a place in the 2026 Sustainable Campus Index. The distinction comes in large part from earning a STARS gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) in 2025.

The Sustainable Campus Index (SCI) celebrates colleges and universities that are leading the way in sustainability, showcasing top performers by country, institution type and across 13 impact areas. This index provides a framework used by hundreds of institutions to measure, report and improve their sustainability performance. STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. 

TU was highlighted for its investment in renewable energy sources. In 2024, TU began purchasing 100% renewable electricity as part of a larger goal of achieving carbon neutrality and expanding the use of renewable energy. The university has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 60% since 2008 and achieved a recycling rate of 43.9%. Additionally, TU installed a geothermal system that will begin powering a new academic building in 2027.

TU is committed to using sustainable practices, responsibility management and efficient use of all resources. This ranking recognizes TU’s continued success in integrating sustainability in all aspects of campus and campus life.
