Family, friends, TU alumni and supporters gathered Sept. 19 at Matthew’s 1600 Restaurant and Bar to celebrate the life and legacy of Elizabeth Wainio ’95 and raise funds for the Honor Elizabeth Wainio ’95 Memorial Communications Scholarship.

Held during the 25th anniversary year of Wainio’s passing aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, the annual fundraiser brought the Towson University community together to remember an alumna whose legacy continues to shape the lives of communications students.

Established by Wainio’s family, the Scholarship has awarded more than $300,000 to 45 students in the College of Fine Arts and Communication since 2005. This year’s event, with a record-setting attendance of more than 200, featured food and refreshments, a silent auction and wine pull, along with remarks from Regina Carlow, Ph.D., dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications, current Wainio scholarship recipients and family friends. 

To date, this year’s fundraiser has generated more than $53,000 for the scholarship, bringing the total amount raised to over $700,000 since it was established.

Through the continued generosity of donors and supporters, Wainio’s memory lives on by helping aspiring communications professionals pursue their academic and career goals at Towson University.
