Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities
that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally
designed to promote student learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are
key concepts of service-learning. Service-learning is effective in both instilling
civic responsibility in students and helping them comprehend and synthesize course

numerous tools to enhance service-learning courses.
Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program
The Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program provides support for TU faculty interested in incorporating a significant service-learning
component into a course.
Through BTU: Partnerships at Work for Greater Baltimore, Towson University captures and supports the work taking place between TU and the
community. Beginning in fiscal year 2019 (July 1, 2018–June 30, 2019), TU faculty,
staff, and students can apply for funding resources aimed to align, scale, sustain, and institutionalize community engagement partnerships
Additionally, BTU is providing transportation funding and parking codes for the purpose of bringing partners onto TU’s campus, and/or bringing
TU faculty, staff, and students off-campus to engage in partnership work.
Service-Learning Assessment Tools
Assessment can help determine the effectiveness of a service-learning course and its
impact on students, faculty and community partners. The Office of Civic Engagement
& Social Responsibility offers several assessment tools to help faculty collect usable
data from service-learning courses, easily receive feedback from community partners
