The College of Fine Arts and Communication invites applications for a tenure-track, 10-month Assistant Professor position in journalism and new media in the Department of Mass Communication beginning August 2020.
PhD in journalism, mass communication, or related fields. ABD applicants considered, but appointment will be at the Instructor rank and all degree requirements must be complete by February 1, 2021. Demonstrated success or potential to teach journalism courses with an emphasis on mobile and web site development, visual communication and multimedia storytelling techniques. Demonstrate the potential to develop a strong body of scholarship. Experience with broadcasting, social media as a reporting tool, audience analytics and data journalism is a plus. Professional multimedia journalism experience is preferred. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.
Faculty assigned an instructional workload of six (6) course units per academic year for the first year. Beginning the second year, the workload reverts back to the standard instructional workload of seven to eight (7-8) course units per academic year. Teach courses such as Multimedia Reporting Capstone, Digital Publishing, Media Audience Analytics, News Reporting, Broadcast Journalism, News Editing, and Feature Writing. Opportunities might exist to teach other courses in the applicant’s area of specialty, such as Media Criticism, Research Methods, Media Ethics or Media Law. Graduate teaching opportunities include such courses as Social Media Content Strategy, Media and Politics, Mass Media Law and Regulations, or Mass Communication and Culture. Undergraduate advising is part of teaching responsibilities. Scholarly research productivity, programmatic assessment activity, and service to the department, college and university are expected.
