Release of Student Information Under FERPA

Catalog Reference - Educational Records Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Towson University may provide directory information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) without the written consent of students.

At Towson University, directory information is limited to:

  • Student Legal Name
  • Permanent Address Without Written Consent of Students (present or former)
  • Towson University Email Address
  • Major Field of Study
  • Dates of Attendance
  • Degrees, Awards, and Honors Conferred
  • Class Standing (e.g. Senior, Junior, etc.)
  • Prior Post-Secondary Institution, Enrollment status (full-time/part-time)
  • Participation in Officially Recognized Activities & Sports
  • Weight and Height of Members of Athletic Teams

Under the provisions of FERPA, students have the right to withhold the disclosure of directory information. Student requests for non-disclosure may be made in the Registrar's Office any time during the semester. Students requesting non-disclosure of directory information will also be removed from Towson's online Student Directory.

Towson University is in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended (a.k.a. Buckley Amendment). As such, it is the policy of the university to:

  • permit students to inspect their education records
  • limit disclosure to others of personally identifiable information from education records without students’ prior written consent
  • provide students the opportunity to seek correction of their education records where appropriate
