Local recruiters will be on campus to talk with students. Recruiters joining us this semester are: US Navy, US Army, and US Marines. The Loyola ROTC representatives will also be present for those who are interested in the program.

22for22 Challenge Kickoff                                                       October 10 - November 8, 2018

Every day 22 Military Service Members commits suicide while suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The Military & Veterans Center is challenging students, staff and faculty to do 22 pushups for the 22 military service members committing suicide every day. Groups and student organizations are encouraged to stop by and take the challenge together.

Human Library                                                                        Tuesday, Oct. 16 - Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018

“Human Books” challenge stereotypes through respectful conversation with others. During the Human Library, volunteers from our campus community act as books. Titles of all Human Library books relate to one or more aspects of the volunteer’s identity; usually, an identity that has faced bias or discrimination. Starting with brief 15-30 minute conversations, we hope to challenge societal prejudices and bring a better understanding of community to everyone involved.

Annual Veterans Film Series: Das Boot (1981)                           Friday, October 26, 2018 • (Collaboration w/ COFAC)

A German submarine patrols the Atlantic Ocean during World War II, manned by a crew that must contend with tense conflicts and long stretches of confined boredom. While war correspondent Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer) observes day-to-day life aboard the U-boat, the grizzled captain (Jürgen Prochnow) struggles to maintain his own motivation as he attempts to keep the ship's morale up in the face of fierce battles, intense storms and dwindling supplies.

Annual Veterans Film Series: Army of Shadows (1969)              Friday, November 2, 2018 • (Collaboration w/ COFAC)

An adaptation of the book by Joseph Kessel paints an understated, unglamorous portrait of the French Resistance during World World II. Betrayed by an informant, Philippe Gerbier (Lino Ventura) finds himself trapped in a torturous Nazi prison camp. Though Gerbier escapes to rejoin the Resistance inoccupied Marseilles, France, and exacts his revenge on the informant, he must continue a quiet, seemingly endless battle against the Nazis in an atmosphere of tension, paranoia and distrust.

Annual Veterans Film Series: Red Tails (2012)                           Friday, November 9, 2018 • (Collaboration w/ COFAC)

During World War II, the Civil Aeronautics Authority selects 13 black cadets to become part of an experimental program at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The program aims at training "colored personnel" to become fighter pilots for the Army. However, discrimination, lack of institutional support and the racist belief that these men lacked the intelligence and aptitude for the job dog their every step. Despite this, the Tuskegee Airmen, as they become known, more than prove their worth.

Annual Veterans Film Series: Grave of the Fireflies (1988)         Friday, November 16, 2018 • (Collaboration w/ COFAC)

A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive.

We will be collecting toys for tots and accepting non-perishable and hygiene items for the Towson University Food Insecurity Fund. Donation boxes are also spread out over campus (look for wrapped boxes). Main drop points are: Admin: Civic Engagement & Social Responsibility, Cook Library Lobby, Counseling Center, University Union Lobby and the Military and Veterans Center, Psych 107. Help spread the holiday cheer and donate today!

Week of Valor: Reflections of Vietnam

The Military and Veterans Center presents a week of events honoring and commemorating the veterans of the Vietnam War. Experience the Live Museum and learn a little bit about what it was like, watch films that explore thought-provoking Vietnam War themes, find out what it was like for women serving in Vietnam, challenge yourself with a veteran obstacle course.
