From a snowy start to a Union hug-a-thon, photos of the best moments of the semester so far
The start of the spring semester brought great highs, like new dining options and basketball wins, and lows, like frigid temperatures. Read on for photos highlighting some of the best moments of the semester so far.
A snowy start
Tigers got three extra days of winter break when a winter storm dumped 10 inches of snow and ice across the region. As facilities crews worked tirelessly to clear roads and sidewalks, some Tigers took advantage of the opportunity to have a little fun in the snow.
Mascots take TU
Thousands of fans braved the cold for TU’s mascot mania game on Jan. 31. More than a dozen mascots from area schools and businesses helped SECU Arena roar with excitement as the Tigers beat Hampton University, 82-50. The mascots even played a basketball game of their own during halftime.
Bonding over interests
The Spring Student Involvement Fair packed the University Union ballrooms with more than 200 student organizations looking to connect with potential new members. From improv to anime, no interest was too small and no hobby too niche to find a group of people to enjoy it with.
A trip to the moon
Students, faculty and staff took a free trip to the moon on Feb. 6 courtesy of the TU Planetarium. Physics, astronomy and geosciences professor Christian Ready gave attendees an inside look at NASA’s Artemis II mission just weeks before it’s slated to send four astronauts to the moon. Public planetarium shows are held on the first and third Friday of every month during the academic year.
Smarter workouts
The TU community got access to revolutionary strength training equipment when the EGYM launched in Campus Rec on Jan. 29. The equipment offers personalized training programs and hands-free equipment set-up based on your height, current strength and fitness goals. TU is one of just 10 universities in the country to offer EGYM.
Tiger Tuesdays return
Black and gold is back, baby. The spring semester brought the return of Tiger Tuesdays, a weekly tradition that has Tigers showing their school pride during the day then competing in trivia and bingo at night. You can join in the fun in the University Union every week, but make sure to bring your A game: Prizes are on the line.
New dining hall opens
Hungry Tigers on the south side of campus had their dining wishes come true when Doc’s South Campus Grille had its grand opening Feb. 3. Students, faculty, staff, coaches and athletes alike showed up to sample the all-you-can-eat menu featuring nutrition-forward sandwiches, salads, soups, hot entrées and more.
Doc hugs it out
Hundreds of Tigers hugged it out with the TU mascot during the annual Doc Hug-A-Thon Feb. 11. Students, faculty, staff and their families celebrated Valentine’s Day by sending hugs, which Doc happily dished out in the Union. We hear his arms are still sore from all the love.
